Hon. Rebecca Miano Makes Maiden Visit to KWS Headquarters, Highlights Wildlife Conservation Efforts
In a landmark visit to the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) Headquarters, the new Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, Hon. Rebecca Miano, emphasized the crucial role of wildlife conservation in Kenya’s economy and heritage. The visit marked her inaugural tour of KWS, reflecting her commitment to preserving the nation’s rich biodiversity.
Speaking at the headquarters, Miano underscored the importance of KWS in conserving Kenya’s wildlife, which is a major draw for international tourists. Safari tourism, she noted, accounts for approximately 75% of Kenya’s tourist arrivals, significantly contributing to the national GDP and foreign exchange earnings.
During her visit, Miano expressed her enthusiasm for the “Tunza Mali Yako” campaign, an initiative aimed at raising awareness about wildlife conservation and fostering harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife. She praised the campaign for its innovative approach in promoting conservation and changing behaviors towards wildlife.
Miano also held discussions with the Board of Trustees, including Chair Gen. Walter Raria Koipaton, and other board members, focusing on advancing KWS’s mandate. She emphasized the need for robust leadership, clear goals, and adherence to good corporate governance practices. Effective communication with stakeholders and communities living near wildlife habitats was highlighted as essential for seamless service delivery.
The Cabinet Secretary paid tribute to the fallen heroes of conservation, acknowledging their sacrifices at the Conservation Heroes Monument. She expressed her deep appreciation for the dedication of KWS staff, both in urban and remote field locations, and promised her support for their efforts.
Looking ahead, Miano expressed eagerness to visit national parks and interact with field staff. She commended KWS’s new strategic plan, which aims to transform the organization into a more resilient and efficient entity.
Miano concluded her remarks by urging KWS staff to uphold integrity and diligence in their work, and to support the government’s Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda to improve the quality of life for all Kenyans.
With her visit, Hon. Rebecca Miano reaffirmed her commitment to supporting KWS in its mission to safeguard Kenya’s wildlife and enhance the nation’s tourism industry.
