Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Snubs DCI Invitation Amid Assassination Claims

Impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has declined an invitation from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding his claims of assassination attempts on his life. Instead, Gachagua appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on October 22 to contest his impeachment.

The DCI clarified that the invitation was not a summons but rather an effort to obtain clarification on Gachagua’s serious allegations. An official stated, “This is not a summon but a move to have him clarify the claims he made.”

Gachagua, who had recently been discharged from Karen Hospital following a health scare, alleged two separate assassination attempts—one in Kisumu on August 30 and another in Nyeri on September 3. He claimed undercover agents attempted to poison his food in both incidents. During a news conference, he expressed his fear for his safety, stating, “I don’t feel safe. We managed to evade the poisoning attempts.”

The DCI emphasized the gravity of Gachagua’s statements and insisted that his input was crucial for the ongoing investigation. They had requested him to report to their headquarters to provide a statement.

In a turn of events, Gachagua accused President William Ruto of betrayal, expressing disbelief that the man he supported to the presidency could turn against him. “If anything happens to me or my family, President Ruto must be held to account,” he declared.

As of now, President Ruto has not publicly commented on Gachagua’s impeachment or the deputy president’s allegations. The political landscape remains tense as these developments unfold, drawing significant attention both within and outside the government.
