Impeachment Motion Against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua Gains Momentum
On October 1, 291 Members of Parliament signed an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, initiated by Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse. The motion accuses Gachagua of several serious offenses, including abuse of office, corruption, sponsoring protests by Gen Z, leaking state secrets, intimidating state officials, promoting tribalism, and opposing government policies.
In response to the motion, Speaker Moses Wetangula announced a period of public participation, allowing constituents to voice their opinions across various counties regarding the allegations against their deputy president. This move is aimed at gathering public sentiment before the parliamentary proceedings.
Gachagua has attempted to halt the impeachment process, seeking a court injunction against the motion. However, the court rejected his request, allowing public participation to continue unabated.
On October 8, Gachagua is expected to defend himself in Parliament, where MPs will then vote on the motion. The outcome of this vote remains uncertain, and speculation is rife about whether he will manage to retain his position.
President William Ruto has remained notably silent amid the unfolding controversy surrounding his deputy, raising questions about the government’s internal dynamics. As the date of the parliamentary session approaches, many are left wondering: Will Rigathi Gachagua survive the impeachment motion?
