Insecurity Primarily Occurs Within Turkana County's Internal Borders Specifically with Samburu, Baringo and West Pokot Counties Turkana Senator Tells Senate Security Community

Turkana County Senator James Lomenen, has today appeared before Senate Committee on National Security and Foreign Relations to represent Turkana County residents on a Petition to the Senate Concerning the state of insecurity in Turkana County.

Senator Lomenen Informed the Committee that, Turkana community has a long history of enduring inter-community raids, a challenge that has persisted for generations, the rise of terrorism and commercialized banditry can be traced back to the disarmament of the National Police Reservists (NPRs), which left a security vacuum and created an opportunity for certain individuals to exploit the situation.

‘’Insecurity primarily occurs within Turkana County’s internal borders, specifically with Samburu, Baringo, and West Pokot counties. The perpetrators have capitalized on the security gap to engage in acts of terror and banditry for personal gain, such as selling stolen livestock to illicit markets.’’ Turkana Senator said
In addition, Senator Lomenen informed Senator Cheptumo led Committee that, land boundary disputes/boundary expansion; Cattle Rustling Business; Competition for Livestock Pastures and Water; retaliatory raids; political incitement and facilitation of Bandits; ethnic distrust and hatred and disarmament of NPRs are the major factors contributing to the ongoing insecurity in Turkana County’s internal borders.

‘’Therefore, Petitioners pray that the Committee urgently intervenes in this matter with a view to; facilitate peaceful dialogue involving impartial mediators and traditional leaders. and negotiations between communities involved in land disputes to find lasting solutions; Committee to initiate land mapping and registration processes to clarify ownership and boundaries to help reduce ambiguity and prevent future conflicts and Committee also enhance law enforcement efforts against cattle rustling activities, by increased patrols, intelligence gathering, and collaboration between security agencies.’’ Senator Lomenen alluded
Lawmakers resolved to invite relevant authorities to clarify on the matter.

Committee also had a meeting with its National Assembly counterpart to deliberate on the approval of the deployment of Kenya Police Service Officers to the Multinational Security Support Mission to Haiti. Legislators resolved to invite Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Interior and Administration together with Inspector General of Police to shed light on the Matter.
