Janet Mbugua thought on Maputo Protocol
Last night, the Maputo Protocol turned 20; a document that was one of the first of its kind to put women’s and girls rights in Africa at the heart of progress, equality, justice and more.
I remember hearing about it many years ago and over time, learning about its impact on the lives of many today.
It was an honor to be a part of the celebration as one of the evenings hosts, alongside the multifaceted Larry Asego (@asegophotography) and join the Chief Guest, Cabinet Secretary for Gender, Hon. Aisha Jumwa as she lead the festivities and commemorations.
One of the evenings highlights was the launch of a publication that takes stock of the 20 year journey, and which will be available to all soon!
The second and third picture capture this moment as well as some of the most influential women in the push for Equality, including Faiza Mohamed, the Africa Director for @equalitynoworg, Samia Melkhi, a key voice in women’s rights in North Africa, Soni Minha who is the Global Executive Director for Equality Now, Veronica Nduva who is the Principal Secretary in the State Department for Gender and Hon. Susan Nakhumicha who is the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Health.
Congratulations to all the award recipients last night and what an invigorating reminder about the work that lies ahead in pushing for fairness for all!
