Kagimu Wins the Inaugural Eldoret Cycle 100 championships
Ugandan Charles Kagimu on Sunday won the champions of the inaugural Eldoret Cycle 100 championships in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.
Kagimu, defeated Kenyan Salim Kipkemboi ahead of Commonwealth Games that will be held in Birmingham, England between 28th July to August 8th, 2022.
Kagimu clocked 2:38.19 ahead of Kipkemboi who finished with 2:38.20 while Paul Lomuria completed the podium in 2:47.07
“The course was tough from the beginning to Nyaru because it’s altitude area and has a lot of climbing and also challenging but I managed to handle it,” he said.
He said he will be competing in a couple of races in Turkey , Morocco, Common Wealth Games to be held in Birmingham and world championships.
“The skills I used to beat them is that I was able to be able to ride in the wind, I was well trained because we had other international competition coming, I was in a good condition to win the race,” he added.
“I have a busy calendar and finishing second here with my teammate winning, it is part of the best training for me. I have three important races so far and I need endurance, which I have managed today,” said Kipkemboi who last month competed at the Tour of Thailand finishing in 7th position.
The 100km riders covered two running counties of Uasin Gishu and Elgeyo Marakwet with the aim of conserving Kaptagat Forest.
Joseph Gachora won in the Black Mamba category in 1:20.08 followed by Gibson Alwanda (1:20.09) and John Muchiri completing the podium in 1:24.20.
Peter Karanja won the Mountain Bike category in 3:06.56 followed by Julius Kaiguara (3:17.15 and Joseph Kariuki came third timing 3:29.24.
Other winners in the 100km men include Charles Kagimu 2:38.19, Salim Kipkemboi- 2:38.20, Paul Lomuria-2:47.07, Evans Wangai- 2:52.23, and Lawrence Lorot- 2:52.24
In 100km women, Joyce Nyaruri won in3:38.50

Sheila Arusei customer service and marketing manager ELDOWAS says “We are here today because we appreciate nature one of our objectives is the conservation, our core mandate is the supply of water and sanitation services in Eldoret we would like to support such course since it helps in conserving the environment and also help support talents,” she said.
Martin Keino director of Keino sports events and the organizer of the event said the reason for organizing Eldoret Cycle 100 was to give a chance riders from this area an opportunity to compete in a challenging event.
“The theme of the event was the conservation of Kapatagat forest, mitigation of climate in this region where we
sensitized people, living in the region on the importance of conserving it. We will have a similar event in September,” Keino said.
He noted they tend to hold the event annually where it will interact with international cyclists.
“We hope it will inspire other cyclists from the region to participate in the event in this region since we have good quality roads, environment for cyclists,” he said
The winner got Sh 200,000.
