Kakamega County Dethrones Kisii to Reclaim KICOSCA Tug of War Tittle
It was sweet revenge for Kakamega County Tug of War women team against Kisii County at this year’s Kenya Inter-County Sports Association (2023 KICOSCA) games as they demolished their opponents Kisii 3-0 to reclaim the title they lost to them last year in Kisumu County.
This year’s final was a repeat of last edition’s final at Mamboleo Stadium in Kisumu County where Kisii served Kakamega a bitter pill with an unexpected win to end Kakamega’s dominance in the game in KICOSCA competitions.
Kakamega County Captain Dorcas Nandwa attributed the team’s perfect run this year to the ladies determination and moral support from fans who included Kakamega players from other disciplines and Senior County Officers among them CECM Lawrence Omuhaka of PSCA, Chief Officers and Directors who showed solidarity with the County ambassadors.
Kakamega Overall Team Captain Sam Anyova said the County however fell short of their targets that included defending the football title and appreciated the visionary leadership of H.E the Governor FCPA Fernandes Barasa that saw the athletes receive immeasurable support from the County Government prior and during the competitions.
Kakamega also flourished in Ajua where the team, captained by Chris Musando, clinched the overall winners trophy and will be the team to beat in subsequent editions having reached the finals two years in a row.
The County also performed superbly in track events winning 4 by 1 relays for both men and women while Cynthia Awino and Lilian Keya finished in positions 4 and 5 respectively in the 100m finals. Griffin Osaka and Dancun Lando were position 4 and 7 finishers in that order in the same race in men’s category.
Gracing the closing ceremony, Sports Committee Chairperson at the Council of Governors and also West Pokot Governor H.E Simon Kachapin together with his host H.E Kawira Mwangaza thanked all the participating counties for competing in the 10th edition of the competitions which they termed a perfect platform for promoting peace and cohesion amongst the different Kenyan communities.
West Pokot lifted the football trophy after trouncing highly rated Nakuru County 1-0 in a scintillating match played at Kinoru Stadium. Nairobi County triumphed in Table Tennis while Bungoma County ladies emerged champions in Handball.
Laikipia County Tug of War were the surprise team of the tournament bullying opponents from the pool stage, including favourites Kisumu and Nairobi Counties, to lift the overall men’s title. Kisumu came second after the playoff against Nyandarua County.
