Kakamega Launches 2023 Seasonal Weather Forecast
The County Government of Kakamega through the Department of Environment, Natural Resources and Climate change in collaboration with the State Department of Metrology and other Development partners held a participatory scenario planning workshop at Golf hotel, Kakamega where the Seasonal weather forecast 2023 was launched with an aim of reviewing the past long rains seasons and assessing the current livelihood and climate dependant investment status in Kakamega County.
In her remarks, the CECM for Water, Environment, Natural Resources and Climate change Dr. Mariam Barasa appreciated the partners for their contribution and projects targeting mitigation of the effects of climate change in the County in realization of Environmental sustainability which is key in strengthening Agriculture and boosting food security, a key pillar of H.E FCPA Governor Fernandes Barasa’s Manifesto.
Dr Barasa said the weather forecast will inform on the start of rainy season, distribution of rainfall, quantity as well as the temperature, which is significant in understanding the climate patterns and their impact on farming. This, she observed, will guide farmers on adaptive measures such as planting drought resistant crops and minimizing production risks.
In-charge Chief Officer Mr Justin Mutobera explained that climate change increases the frequency and intensity of extreme weather occurence such as droughts and floods adding that the forecast will come in handy in ensuring that the Government mitigates and counters effects of climate change.
