Kalonzo Musyoka Threatens to Lead Demonstrations if IEBC is Not Formed by March 2025
Kenyans across the country are bracing for possible political unrest after Wiper Party leader, Kalonzo Musyoka, issued a stark warning to the government over the delay in the formation of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
Speaking to supporters in Karurumo, Musyoka stated that if the IEBC is not fully constituted before March next year, he would spearhead countrywide demonstrations to demand its formation. “Watu Wa Karurumo wamechangamka!” he declared, rallying the crowd, and emphasizing that the formation of the electoral commission is a matter of urgency for the country’s democratic integrity.
The IEBC, which is responsible for overseeing elections in Kenya, has remained incomplete despite promises of reform and the urgency of its formation following the last general election. Musyoka’s statement has added pressure on the government to address the issue, with many fearing that the continued delay could erode public trust in the electoral process.
Additionally, Musyoka turned his attention to the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), urging the party to clarify its political position. “We want ODM to tell us before the New Year 2025: Are you in the opposition or in government?” Musyoka demanded, stressing the importance of having a clear stance as political tensions grow. His remarks suggest mounting frustration with the political dynamics, particularly the ambiguity surrounding ODM’s role in the current government, following the August 2022 elections.
Political analysts warn that the uncertainty over the IEBC and the growing division within the opposition could lead to increased instability in the lead-up to the 2027 elections. Musyoka’s call for mass protests, if realized, could further exacerbate tensions in an already volatile political environment.
The government has yet to respond to Musyoka’s threats, but with mounting pressure from the opposition, the formation of the IEBC remains a critical issue in Kenya’s political discourse.
