Physical planners from the Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Program Phase 2 (KISIP-2) have today launched the spatial planning exercise for Kapcherop informal settlement in Sengwer Ward, Marakwet Sub County.

Through the department of Lands, Urban Planning and Physical Planning, the county government of Elgeyo is partnering with KISIP-2 to improve infrastructure within the towns as plans are underway for its elevation.
The program focuses on settlement upgrading, social economic improvement, institutional upgrading and program management and coordination.

The exercise, supported by the World Bank as well as the national and county governments, seeks to empower communities in the area and enhanced their livelihoods.

Speaking during the launch, Lead Consultant Spatial Milestone, Stephen Ngare, assured beneficiaries that the exercise will not displace anyone who rightfully occupies parcels of land within the area and called for collaborative efforts to fast track the process.

He added that the initial phase that involves land tenure regularisation will culminate in allotment letters for the occupiers of the parcels of land and thereafter issuance of title deeds.

CEC in Charge of the Department, Mr. Thomas Maiyo, disclosed that a socio-economic survey would be done and an enumeration of the structure owners before a validation exercise by the Settlement Executive Committee (SEC) members after which planning will be done and approved by the County Assembly.

“This will guide the improvement of infrastructure including road networks, drainage and power connectivity among other amenities,” he added.

National Lands Commission County Coordinator, Rebecca Maritim, affirmed to the beneficiaries that they will get their titles and leaseholds letters upon completion of the process.

Members of the community welcomed the program saying it was bound to attract economic gains hence making their livelihoods better.

Other upcoming urban and settlement launch areas include Tambach, Kapsowar and Bugar among others.
Also in attendance was Sub County Administrator, Patrick Maiyo, Kapcherop ACC, Directors and other county
