Kenya Approves Trade Agreement with UAE to Boost Economic Ties

In a significant move aimed at strengthening its global economic presence, Kenya’s cabinet has officially endorsed the Kenya-UAE Economic Partnership Agreement. The agreement, which was negotiated earlier this year, marks a pivotal step towards expanding trade relations and enhancing market access between the two nations.

The bilateral agreement was finalized through technical negotiations between Trade Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano and her UAE counterpart Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi. According to a joint communique dated February 22, the agreement underscores both countries’ commitment to fostering economic cooperation and enhancing investment flows.

Key provisions of the agreement include preferential market access for Kenyan exports such as tea, meat, fruits, vegetables, and cut flowers to the UAE market. This initiative is expected to bolster Kenya’s export sector by eliminating trade barriers and creating new opportunities for economic and technical collaboration.

Moreover, the agreement highlights plans for engagement with the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat to further expand market access within the region. This strategic approach aims to integrate Kenya-UAE trade activities into broader regional economic frameworks, enhancing overall economic stability and growth.

Speaking on the conclusion of negotiations, Secretary Miano emphasized the agreement’s significance in strengthening bilateral ties and promoting mutual economic progress. “The CEPA represents a shared commitment to advancing economic opportunities for our peoples and business communities,” she stated.

The agreement now awaits parliamentary debate and approval before coming into force. Once ratified, it is expected to facilitate smoother trade processes, encourage foreign investments, and open avenues for service sector collaborations between Kenya and the UAE.

In parallel, Kenya continues to expand its global trade footprint, with recent agreements such as the Kenya-EU partnership, which grants duty-free, quota-free access to the EU market for Kenyan exports. This diversification strategy underscores Kenya’s proactive stance in enhancing international trade relations and economic resilience.
