Kenya Chairs 7th AAMA Conference in Dar es Salaam, Focuses on Africa’s Maritime Future

Through its Maritime Administration (KMA), is currently chairing the 7th Association of African Maritime Administrations (AAMA) Conference, held this morning in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The conference, which runs for three days, is being conducted under the theme, *‘Navigating the Future of Africa’s Maritime Sector.’*

The gathering has attracted key maritime leaders from across the continent, including heads of maritime administrations, renowned scholars, and various industry stakeholders. The event aims to foster discussions on how Africa can leverage its maritime sector to contribute to the continent’s development and greater integration into the global economy.

In her opening remarks, the Kenyan delegation expressed great pride in the country’s leadership role, as Kenya holds the chairmanship of AAMA this year. The delegation emphasized Kenya’s commitment to supporting the association, including providing a headquarters for AAMA’s secretariat in Mombasa.

“The maritime industry is central to Africa’s economic development. We must work collectively to unlock its full potential and position the continent as a global maritime powerhouse,” said the Kenyan representative. “Let us focus on practical, actionable solutions that can drive transformation in Africa’s maritime sector.”

Over the past decade, AAMA has emerged as a crucial platform for African nations to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and build consensus on strengthening the role of maritime administrations on the continent. This year’s conference continues that tradition, with a focus on strengthening Africa’s maritime governance and ensuring sustainable growth in the sector.

Among the distinguished speakers at the event were the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy of Tanzania, Hon. Doto Mashaka Bitego, who served as the Chief Guest. Also present were the Secretary General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez; Tanzania’s Minister for Transport, Hon. Prof. Makame Mnyaa Mbarawa (MP); the Permanent Secretary for Transport, Prof. Godius Walter Kahyarara; and the Director General of the Tanzania Shipping and Ports Corporation (TASAC), Mr. Mohamed Malick Salum. A representative of the Regional Commissioner of Dar es Salaam also attended.

The conference is expected to generate actionable insights aimed at strengthening maritime governance and fostering sustainable growth, which will benefit not only the region but the global maritime industry at large.
