Kenyan Government Empowers Women in Blue Economy Sector with Ksh 50 Million

In a significant move towards gender inclusion and economic empowerment, the Kenyan government, led by Honorable Kaituko, has allocated Ksh 50 million to support 19 businesswomen in the Blue Economy sector. The funds, presented by Cabinet Secretary HE Salim Waziri_Mvurya, were distributed to women from Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, and Kwale regions.

These women, carefully selected by the State Department for Blue Economy and Fisheries Development under the “Investing in Women in Blue Economy Project,” are poised to receive substantial support for their businesses. The initiative, funded by the Africa Enterprise Challenge Fund (AECF) with backing from Global Affairs Canada, aims to foster gender equity and economic growth in coastal communities.

Among the distinguished guests at the cheque presentation ceremony were Faiz Fankupi and Roman Shera, the CECs overseeing Blue Economy affairs for Lamu and Kwale respectively. Their presence underscored the government’s commitment to collaborative efforts in promoting sustainable development in the Blue Economy sector.

Honorable Kaituko expressed his appreciation for the initiative, highlighting its impact on women’s livelihoods and the broader economy. He praised the project’s success in Lake Victoria and announced plans for its expansion to benefit women in Lake Turkana, underscoring the government’s dedication to reaching marginalized communities across the country.

Acknowledging the instrumental role played by PS Betsy Njagi in advocating for women’s inclusion in the Blue Economy sector, Honorable Kaituko emphasized the importance of continued collaboration and support for gender-responsive initiatives.
