Kenyan Lawmakers Shine at EAC Interparliamentary Games Darts Tournament
Kenyan Members of Parliament (MPs) stole the show on Day Four of the East African Community Interparliamentary Games (EAC-IPG) at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, showcasing their skills in the darts category.
The action-packed day saw the Kenyan legislators outplay their regional counterparts, with the men’s team led by Westlands MP, Timothy Wanyonyi Wetang’ula. Wetang’ula, known for his leadership and determination, led his team with vigor and precision. In a thrilling opening match, he faced a formidable Ugandan opponent. The contest was closely contested, but Wetang’ula clinched victory, winning two rounds to one, much to the delight of cheering fans and fellow parliamentarians.
The women’s darts category also featured strong performances from Kenyan MPs. Makueni MP Rose Museo fought hard in her match against a Ugandan rival. In a closely contested affair, Museo emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline. The excitement continued with Turbo MP Janet Sitienei, who impressed the crowd with her remarkable accuracy, outclassing her Tanzanian opponent.
However, not all matches went in favor of the Kenyan lawmakers. Nominated Senator George Mbugua was narrowly defeated by his Tanzanian counterpart in a hard-fought battle, but his exemplary sportsmanship stood out, earning him praise from both fans and fellow competitors.
In a significant move towards inclusivity, the darts category for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) was officially launched at the event. The Speaker of the East African Legislative Assembly, Rt. Hon. Joseph Ntakirutimana, inaugurated the category and reiterated his commitment to supporting legislators living with disabilities. This marks a step forward in ensuring that all parliamentarians, regardless of physical ability, have an opportunity to participate and excel in sports.
As the tournament progresses, the Kenyan MPs remain focused on securing victories and trophies, with the next round of contests eagerly anticipated. The stakes are high, and the passion for competition remains unwavering as the games continue this Wednesday at the same venue.
The EAC-IPG serves as a platform for fostering regional cooperation and solidarity, with sports providing a unique way for lawmakers to engage with one another and showcase their competitive spirit.
