Kenyan Lawmakers Shine in Golf, Claim Gold at Regional Tournament
Kenya’s golfers have emerged victorious at the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games, clinching top honors in a thrilling competition at Nyali Golf Club, Mombasa. The men’s golf team delivered an impressive performance, securing a total of 378 aggregate points on a par 71 course to claim victory, despite strong competition from neighboring Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), and Sudan.
Machakos Town Member of Parliament (MP) Hon. Caleb Mule was the standout player in the men’s competition, finishing as the Best Male Player with 100 points, narrowly trailing Uganda’s Hon. Nayebale Sylvia, who scored 117 points. The tournament saw fierce competition across three rounds, with Kenya’s Golf Men Captain, and Buuri MP, Hon. Rindikiri Mugambi, winning the Best Male Player title in Round 2. Meanwhile, Senator Chesang secured the Best Male Player title in Round 1.
The women’s league was dominated by Mwea MP, Hon. Mary Maingi, who not only topped the leaderboard with 99 points but also bagged three individual titles: Best Lady, Longest Drive Lady, and Nearest to Pin Lady. Maingi’s exceptional performance was a testament to her golfing experience, with a handicap of 16.9. Other notable female participants included Hon. Chege Kiragu (84 points), Hon. Kassim Sawa (83 points), and Hon. Fred Ikana (75 points), among others.
Despite Uganda’s overall winner in the men’s category, Kenya’s golfers outperformed their regional rivals, with the Kenyan Men’s Golf Team showing exceptional skill and teamwork. Speaking at the tournament, the Kenya Golf Union Chairman, Mr. David Ndung’u, encouraged more women MPs to take up the sport, emphasizing the need for a full team of four female players to meet competition requirements. He also highlighted plans to bring in a golfing coach to support new members and help existing players refine their skills.
Hon. Fred Ikana, a key figure in the Kenyan team, expressed excitement over the future of the sport, revealing that the union was working on initiatives to open up golf to more MPs and the wider public.
The Ugandan Deputy Speaker, Hon. Tayebwa Thomas, praised Kenya for its excellent hosting of the tournament. “We are so grateful to Kenya for the exceptional hospitality and security accorded to the East African Community countries during the games. Such initiatives are critical in deepening and strengthening regional integration,” said Hon. Tayebwa.
The tournament, which received sponsorship from Kenya Commercial Bank, marks a significant milestone in promoting cross-border collaboration and sportsmanship among East African legislators. With the final round concluding today, Kenya’s golfers have firmly etched their names in the regional sports history.
