In a dramatic turn of events, the Senate of Kenya convened today for the impeachment hearing of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, just days after 281 members of parliament voted to move forward with proceedings against him. Gachagua faces over 11 serious charges, including corruption, undermining the government, and inciting ethnic hatred.

As the session opened, Senate Clerk Jeremiah Nyegenye read the charges aloud, to which Gachagua responded with a firm, “Not guilty,” to each accusation. The atmosphere in the chamber was tense, reflecting the gravity of the situation.

Gachagua’s attempts to halt the impeachment process had previously been thwarted when a court rejected his proposal, affirming the constitutionality of the proceedings. The Deputy President’s defense team has maintained that the charges are politically motivated and an attempt to destabilize his office.

Supporters of Gachagua rallied outside the Senate building, insisting on his innocence and calling for a fair trial. “This is an attack on democracy,” one supporter claimed, voicing concerns about the potential implications for the stability of the government.

As the hearing progresses, the Senate is expected to hear testimonies from both sides. Legal experts suggest that the outcome could significantly impact the current administration and reshape the political landscape in Kenya. Will the Senate ultimately decide Gachagua’s fate, or will he find a way to clear his name amid the swirling controversies? The nation watches closely as the proceedings unfold.
