Kerio Valley is poised for a significant agricultural boost with the distribution of 12 metric tonnes of sorghum seeds by the county government. Led by Governor Wisley Rotich, the initiative targets over 3,000 acres of land, promising a potential harvest of 2,160 tonnes of sorghum.

This project isn’t just about increasing food security. By partnering with East African Breweries Limited (EABL) through a contract farming agreement, the county aims to empower farmers economically. EABL has committed to purchasing the sorghum at a pre-determined price of sh 45 per kilo, translating to a potential windfall of sh 108 million for participating farmers.

Governor Rotich himself led the seed distribution in a specific region of the Valley, demonstrating the project’s importance. Simultaneously, Deputy Governor Prof. Grace Cheserek, alongside County Executive Committee Members (CECs), Chief Officers (COs), and other county staff, replicated the initiative in Endo, Lower Emsoo, and Lower Tambach. The rollout continues tomorrow, reaching farmers in lower Sambirir, Arror, Soy North, and Soy South.

With favorable weather conditions, Governor Rotich urged farmers to waste no time planting their crops. Capitalizing on the current rains will maximize yields and solidify the project’s success. This initiative exemplifies the Kerio Valley county government’s dedication to fostering agricultural development and creating a path toward prosperity for its residents. The project not only tackles food security concerns but also injects potential income into the local economy, empowering farmers and creating a more sustainable future for the region.
