In a strong rebuttal to recent legislative efforts, Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa has announced his firm opposition to Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei’s proposal to extend the presidential term from five years to seven years.

Ichungwa described the proposal as “dead on arrival,” emphasizing that it would not garner the necessary support in Parliament. “Term limits are a cornerstone of our democracy, ensuring accountability and responsiveness from our leaders,” he stated during a press briefing.

Cherargei’s proposal has sparked debate among lawmakers, with proponents arguing that longer terms would allow for more comprehensive policy implementation. However, Ichungwa dismissed these arguments, calling for a focus on initiatives that genuinely benefit the electorate.

“The Kenyan people deserve leadership that is accountable and can be changed if necessary,” he added, urging his colleagues to prioritize legislation that strengthens democratic practices.

As the legislative session progresses, it remains clear that the proposal faces significant opposition, and its future appears uncertain. Lawmakers are now turning their attention to more pressing issues affecting citizens across the country.
