Kitale Hoteliers Undergo Training to Improve Standards
The Tourism Regulatory Authority (TRA) conducted a two-day training session for hoteliers in Trans Nzoia County, aiming to elevate hospitality standards in the region.
The training focused on familiarizing hoteliers with newly developed standards by the TRA. Following the program, auditors from the authority will assess hotels against these guidelines, awarding establishments a Gold, Silver, or Bronze mark of quality.
Those achieving the Gold standard will be eligible for classification or star rating, a process adhering to EAC guidelines and following a five-year cycle. Accreditation, however, operates on a two-year cycle.
Dr. Wachilonga, Director of Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, who delivered the opening remarks on behalf of the chief officer, commended TRA’s efforts to address past challenges in licensing, policy, and hotelier identification. These initiatives, he said, will facilitate categorization and collaboration within the industry.
Trans Nzoia County Secretary Madam Truphosa Amere expressed her gratitude to TRA and participants for organizing and attending the training. She highlighted the county government’s satisfaction in gaining a clear understanding of bed capacity within the region. Amere emphasized that the training will empower hoteliers to enhance service quality.
She urged hoteliers to prioritize consistency and sustainability in service delivery, pinpointing it as the industry’s most significant hurdle. Achieving this, she stressed, will pave the way for the county government to do business with the hospitality sector, thereby propelling its growth.
Amere pledged the county government’s support in attaining the standards outlined by TRA, mentioning the Nawiri fund as a means of achieving this goal.
The County Secretary also commended the Department of Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism for its forward-thinking approach and expressed confidence in the department’s future success.
Mr. Griffin Wanyonyi, Director of Culture, emphasized the potential for increased accreditation and star ratings among hotels due to these training programs. He encouraged hoteliers to actively participate in the sessions to improve their service offerings.
In his closing remarks, Mr. Nicholas Nandasaba, Director of Gender, Youth, Sports, Culture, and Tourism, acknowledged the county’s lack of adequate facilities to host public events. He urged investors to consider investing in this sector.
