Kitale: St Monica Girl Chess Team Celebrated For Historic Win
The St. Monica Girls High School chess team was celebrated today by Governor George Natembeya for their historic win against Egypt at the World Secondary Schools Chess Championship held in August this year in Kazakhstan.
The girls, who were first timers in the international competition, managed to finish in position 138 out of 143 teams. They also managed to beat Egypt, the number one team in Africa.
Governor Natembeya lauded the team for their exemplary performance, saying that his administration will continue to enhance talents. He added that through the department of sports, the county will soon roll out programs that will be used to scout for talents across the county before nurturing them.
The Chief Principal of St. Monica Girls, Grace Onyango, thanked the county for its support. She said that the school would like to see their girls going into universities through chess scholarships.
“We would like our students not just to play chess in school and for it to remain there, but to take it to the higher levels in the universities and colleges so we would like St. Monicas to be a household name when it comes to chess not just in this country but globally,” Mrs. Onyango said.
