KMPDU Demands Swift Action on Delayed Funding and Posting For Medical Interns
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union strongly condemns the Ministry of Health and Treasury for significant delays in releasing funds and posting of 1215 medical interns, a violation of constitutional rights.
According Dr. Davji Atela the Secretary General KMPDU, the government’s failure to expedite the release of funds reflects a shocking lack of commitment to the healthcare sector, particularly the crucial human resource component.
“This delay not only hinders the interns’ careers but also jeopardizes patient care in public hospitals. We demand immediate action, emphasizing the crucial role of medical interns in delivering essential services,” said Dr. Atella.
He noted that the delay contributes to healthcare worker fatigue, burnout, and a decline in patient care standards.
“KMPDU reaffirms its commitment to advocating for the rights and welfare of its members and the rights of all Kenyans to the highest attainable healthcare, as enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya, 2010,” he said.
He further said that the Union demands the posting of medical interns by March 1, 2024.
On February 29, 2024, all interns will be in a peaceful procession to collect letters from MoH
“We have also notified the national and county government for a nationwide go-slow on March 1, 2024. In which all doctors will stand in solidarity with the interns’ impasse,” he noted.
