KUPPET Suspends Nationwide Teachers’ Strike, Urges Immediate Return to Work

In a significant development, the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has announced the suspension of its nationwide strike, effective immediately. This decision comes after several rounds of negotiations with the government aimed at resolving the issues that led to the industrial action.

KUPPET Secretary General, Akello Misori, made the announcement earlier today, urging all teachers across the country to return to their classrooms without delay. The union’s decision follows what it describes as “productive discussions” with government officials, resulting in agreements that address some of the core grievances that led to the strike.

The strike, which had paralyzed schools nationwide, was primarily focused on demands for better pay and improved working conditions for teachers. Misori highlighted that while not all demands were fully met, significant progress had been made, prompting the union to halt the strike to allow normalcy to return to the education sector.

In a statement, Misori expressed gratitude to teachers for their solidarity during the strike and emphasized the importance of returning to work to ensure that students’ education is not further disrupted. The government has also pledged to continue addressing the remaining issues and to engage in further dialogue with KUPPET.

The suspension of the strike is expected to bring relief to millions of students and parents who have been affected by the prolonged closure of schools. Educational institutions are now preparing to resume regular classes, and teachers are being advised to report to their respective schools immediately.

This development marks a critical turning point in the ongoing labor dispute within Kenya’s education sector, and stakeholders are hopeful that it will pave the way for continued dialogue and cooperation between teachers’ unions and the government.
