Brooke East Africa led by the able and gifted Country Director Dr. Raphael Kinoti has taken a moment to call upon each and every one of us to reflect on the importance of the donkey.

Brooke East Africa is particular in advocating for the welfare of working equines (donkeys, horses and mules.)
These beast of burden are sometimes abandoned and neglected despite the fact that they play a very important role in supporting millions of livelihoods globally.

“Our attention has been drawn to worrying statistics of illegal donkey slaughter which continues unabated under the cover of darkness. The worst hit counties are Kiambu, Narok, Kajiado and Nakuru. This is very sad bearing in mind that the same meat ends up in butcheries in Nairobi. The meat is also packaged under very dirty and unsanitary conditions posing a great health risk,” Dr Kinoti observed.

Brooke East Africa has been on the front line advocating for proper care of the working donkeys and calling upon the Department of Veterinary Services to include donkeys during routine immunization so as to protect the equine from contagious diseases such as rabies, equine flu and even anthrax.”
