In a remarkable turn of events, 70-year-old Joseph Nyaanga has returned to his home in Suneke, Kisii County, after being missing for 34 years. Nyaanga’s disappearance left his family without any trace or evidence of his whereabouts until his unexpected return last week.

Nyaanga shared his story, explaining that he had left home due to his job in construction, which took him to various places. “I used to work on construction sites, building roads and bridges. I got lost in an area I didn’t know and was unable to find my way back home,” he said.

During his time away, Nyaanga married another woman in Kabartonjo, Baringo County, and had seven children. He acknowledged the difficulties his disappearance caused for his first family, who were left without closure for decades.

A relative involved in his retrieval revealed the lengths they went to in order to find him. “It wasn’t easy bringing him back. We used a trap of food dedicated by the government to catch him. If his family in Kabartonjo had known we were searching, they might have hidden him,” he explained.

The reunion was filled with mixed emotions, but ultimately, joy prevailed. Nyaanga expressed remorse for his long absence. “I ask for forgiveness for leaving my home for so many years, and I hope to be allowed to stay,” he said.

Residents of Suneke welcomed Nyaanga back with open arms, preparing a hearty meal in celebration of his return. The community expressed their happiness at seeing him again, marking a new chapter for Nyaanga and his reunited family.
