Local Youth Advocate Challenges Self-Proclaimed Youth President in Open Letter

In a bold move aimed at redefining youth representation in Uasin Gishu County, Chumo K. Felix Egh has addressed an open letter to Hon. Kelvin, the self-proclaimed Youth President of the county. The letter, penned on July 13, 2024, criticizes Kelvin’s recent claims of acting as a spokesperson for the youth and calls for a more inclusive approach to youth advocacy.

In the letter, Chumo argues that while Hon. Kelvin’s intentions might stem from a genuine desire to support young people, his role as a self-styled representative oversimplifies the diverse and complex experiences of the youth in Uasin Gishu. “No single individual can fully encapsulate the breadth of perspectives and lived experiences that characterize our generation,” Chumo asserts. He emphasizes that effective representation requires more than just a title and should be grounded in the lived realities of the youth.

Chumo’s letter highlights a critical issue in youth advocacy: the tendency of adults or individuals in positions of power to assume roles that should be filled by young people themselves. He argues that such actions inadvertently diminish the voices of the very individuals they seek to represent. Instead of claiming to be the voice of the youth, Chumo suggests that Hon. Kelvin should focus on creating platforms that empower young people to express their own ideas and solutions.

The letter advocates for a shift towards a model of youth engagement that fosters direct involvement of young people in decision-making processes. By stepping back and allowing youth to speak for themselves, Chumo believes that true empowerment and representation can be achieved.

Chumo’s open letter has sparked a conversation about the nature of youth leadership and representation in Uasin Gishu County. As the debate unfolds, it remains to be seen how both Hon. Kelvin and the community will respond to this call for a more inclusive and authentic approach to youth advocacy.
