Major Motorcycle Theft Operation Leads to Recovery of 59 Motorcycles and 35 Engines in Uasin Gishu
A significant breakthrough in the fight against motorcycle theft was achieved this weekend in Uasin Gishu County following a well-coordinated intelligence-led operation by local police.
The operation resulted in the recovery of 59 stolen motorcycles and 35 engines, as well as the arrest of four suspects connected to the criminal activities.
County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi announced the success of the operation at a press briefing, attributing it to crucial information received from members of the public. The investigation revealed a sophisticated theft and resale scheme involving the removal of GPS trackers, tampering with chassis and engine numbers, and illegal documentation to facilitate the sale of stolen motorcycles.
According to Mwanthi, the criminal network would first disable the GPS trackers on stolen motorcycles and then transport the vehicles to Kapsoya garage. There, they would erase the original chassis numbers, replace the frame numbers, and forge new identification documents to re-register the stolen motorcycles for sale to unsuspecting buyers.
In a concerted effort to address the issue, Mwanthi is calling on bodaboda riders from Uasin Gishu and surrounding areas to visit the police station to check if their stolen motorcycles are among those recovered. He noted that several stolen motorcycles have already been identified, and some cases involve engines being switched between different frames.
Daniel Muleli, the County Criminal Investigation Officer, praised the intelligence-led operation and expressed gratitude to the public for their valuable tips.
“This operation represents a significant step forward in combating motorcycle theft in the region,” Muleli said. “We are continuing our investigations with six suspects in custody, and we hope to uncover more leads that will assist in recovering additional stolen property.”
Muleli also revealed that 32 logbooks are currently being examined to verify their authenticity, which could further impact the investigation. The ongoing operation is expected to dismantle the criminal network and reduce motorcycle thefts in Uasin Gishu.
The police have urged the public to come forward and identify their stolen motorcycles to help build strong cases against the perpetrators. They have also reassured residents that efforts are being made to ensure that this issue is resolved effectively.
