Mandera Governor and MPs Engage in a Fruitfull Discussion

MPs and Governor from Mandera County had a very engaging and fruitful discussions on the devastating impact of El-Nino rains in Northern Kenya with CS Roads and Transport Hon. Onesimus Kipchumba Murkomen at his offices at Transcom House

Among attendees of the the meeting included Mandera Governor H.E. Mohamed AdanKhalif, PS Roads Eng. Joseph Mbugua, Mandera South MP Hon. Abdul Haro(Kore), Mandera East MP Hon. Abdirahman Husseiweytan Mohamed, Mandera West MP Hon. Yusuf Adan Haji, Lafey MP Hon. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdi (Lafey), Nominated MP Hon. Sulekha Harun, KeNHA DG Eng. Kung’u Ndung’u, KeRRA DG Philemon Kandie, among other Ministry officials.

The discussions centred around the flood situation in Northern Kenya that has resulted in deaths, destruction of property, and rendered major roads impassable. Other government programmes aimed at opening up the region in line with the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda were also discussed.

To mitigate the situation, the CS has instructed KeNHA to take the lead in conducting emergency responses in the affected Counties of Mandera, Wajir, Marsabit, Tana River and parts of Garissa regardless of whether roads affected are for KENHA, KERRA or KURA…

As leadership from the region, we emphasized the immediate works on major crossings linking different parts of the county and with the rest of the country. We also requested the Ministry to help with equipments that will help pull transport trucks along the Tarbaj and Kotulo- Mandera border crossing currently by ensuring that the small drift at the border crossing is expanded to enable deal with the effects of Lagsure to enable seamless movement of people and goods even as we wait to assess the damage levels and embark on restoration exercise once the rains subside.

The leadership also pointed out the fact that the tarmac road passing through Elwak did not provide for any drainage of storm water during construction and that future roads sections passing through urban towns like Elwak and Rhamu must have that provision.
