Matatu Industry Urges Government to Exercise Caution on Proposed Crackdown
The Matatu Owners Association (MOA) has called on the government to carefully reconsider its plans for a nationwide crackdown on the public transport sector, warning that such actions could severely impact the industry and inconvenience millions of Kenyans.
Albert Karakacha, President of the Matatu Owners Association, expressed concerns over what he described as the government’s “haphazard” approach, which he believes could be detrimental to the vital public transport system. He emphasized that the matatu industry plays a crucial role in the daily movement of Kenyans, particularly during the busy December festive season.
“We urge the government to involve all stakeholders in the process,” Karakacha said. “Consultation and collaboration are key to finding solutions that benefit everyone, without disrupting the livelihoods of operators or the daily commuters who depend on this service.”
The government’s proposed crackdown, aimed at addressing issues such as reckless driving and unroadworthy vehicles, has sparked concern among operators who fear that it could lead to widespread disruption in the sector. Karakacha pointed out that the current systems and regulatory frameworks could be better utilized to enforce order in the industry without resorting to extreme measures.
With the festive season fast approaching, Karakacha warned that any abrupt moves could cause significant disruption to transport services, affecting not only the matatu operators but also Kenyans who rely on public transport for their holiday travels.
Acting Prime Cabinet Secretary, who oversees transport matters, is expected to provide further clarification on the government’s plans in the coming days, as discussions between the authorities and matatu operators continue.
As the standoff persists, both sides are calling for constructive dialogue to ensure that the needs of all parties are met without compromising the safety and efficiency of the public transport system.
