Meet Kenya Power Passionate Driver

Driving has never been something Gideon Onyimbo thought he would do as a main career let alone dream about it. In fact, he grew up aspiring to be a teacher, a dream and desire fuelled by his father who was a head teacher. Gideon also yearned to pursue a procurement-related job, since he had pursued and graduated in the same. However, life also taught him opportunities present themselves in the strangest of ways and if that happens, not to be afraid to go for them.

Born and raised in Mwangaza, Kisii County, where Gideon pursued his primary and secondary school education, he proceeded to Nairobi to pursue an option in Procurement at the Kenya Institute of Management. Raised in an authoritarian family instilled great discipline that has in turn helped and moulded him into the man that he is today. He later joined Kenya Power in 2000 where he started as a day casual, then moved to the central construction where he worked for two years.

Gideon moved to work as a storeman in Nairobi South where he worked for two years. In 2004, he got the opportunity to work as a driver and began by chauffeuring General Manager, Human Resource and Administration. In 2012, God smiled his way; he was promoted to head of Transport and Logistics in the Managing Director’s office until date.

His work typically begins at 4am until around 10 pm and ensures that transport for other general managers is facilitated. He also makes sure that all the vehicles are up to standard, well serviced and in good shape for use.

Just like every other job, it is bound to meet smooth drives and bumpy ones, and sometimes the bumpy ones tend to be more frequent and lasting. However, what really matters and builds one in the journey is how they handle the challenging times, how much they learn from them and how much they want to reach their goal and destination.

The achievements Gideon has made in his line of duty of having the privilege to drive the senior management team, fulfil him.

Gideon is motivated by the fact that he is a role model and mentor to other drivers who aspire to one-day reach my position. Most importantly, being able to see the growth of his family, together with his own personal investments and his passion for his job all complete him.

All work with no play makes Gideon a dull boy. Therefore, outside Stima Plaza, Gideon Onyimbo is a cool guy, and mostly enjoys exercising in the gym for fitness. When he is not lifting weights, he engages in farming potatoes and beans. He also rears dairy cows back at his rural home and does dog breeding. He enjoys watching football, his team being the great Gunners (Arsenal).

“Since we are not here for eternity, I have a plan not only for my future and my career but also for the younger generations. With the experience I have acquired, I dream of starting a company to train executive drivers, and writing a book, ‘’My Life in Kenya Power’’, for purposes of passing on knowledge. I also intend to launch into yoghurt production from my dairy farm so as to create job opportunities,” Gideon says.
