Members of Parliament Give Submissions on Elevation of Eldoret to City Status
Members of Parliament representing Kesses Constituency, Hon. Julius Ruto, Moiben -Hon Phylis Bartoo, Turbo-Hon Janet Sitienei- Anaibkoi- Hon. Samuel Chepkong’a and Soy-Hon David Kiplagat gave their submissions on conferment of Municipality of Eldoret to a city.
While meeting the Chair ad hoc committee Mr. Willie Kenei and the Municipality of Eldoret Board Chair Mr. Julius Kitur, the Honourable members in unison gave a straight endorsement to the process terming it timely.
“Eldoret has demonstrated the capacity and endless opportunities that makes it worth an eleven to the fifth city in Kenya. I look at the infrastructure developments such as the Eldoret International airport, the African Economic Zone already set up, the expansive 200 acres set to be home to the largest Referral Hospital in Kenya and am proud to say we are prepared to have the city status,” said Hon. Chepkong’a.
In a rejoinder , Hon. Janet Sitienei assured the ad hoc committee that all the political leaders including those in the Northrift Economic Block support the elevation; looking at its massive economic benefits it would generate to the people.
Mr. Kitur notably explained some of the benefits of the city status that include maximising the export market for fresh produce and the expected road infrastructure developments because being a city, means an additional budget allocation for its management.
Hon. David Kiplagat who previously served as the speaker Uasin Gishu County assembly appreciated that the process has come along way and the legislative issues that need to be put in place to ensure the city is run smoothly need to be adhered to.
Ad hoc committee members, Municipality Board Members and the secretariat are finalizing the preliminary report on Municipality of Eldoret conferment to city status and the political leaders input are key in the process.
