Moiben member of parliament Prof Phyllis Bartoo has called on youths to join technical institutions.
Speaking during Jamuhuri day celebrations at Koshin Technical Institute says this will help them be equipped with technical skills which will help them earn a living.

“I call upon parents across the country to bring their children who are at home to pursue technical courses this will ensure that they are quipped with technical skills that will enable;e them to employ themselves,” said the Moiben MP.

She noted that this is the only course that has a ready market where one does not have tarmac.
She however decried the low turnout of students joining technical intuitions.

“It is sad that as I am talking there is a low intake of those joining technical institutions this is because of a bad myth that technical institutions are for failures which are not true, technical institutions are the best since they offer courses that are ready for the market,” says Prof Bartoo.

“In Moiben we have technical institutes in every ward and the turnout is very low yet the government is giving Sh 30,000 per student and the balance one can apply for HELB, let’s take advantage and apply for the technical course,”
She says she will ensure that students in module three are linked with contractors where thye will get a stipend to start their business and start getting their tenders.

Principal Koshin Technical Institute Zipporah Kuto said despite the Institute having four departments that is Building and Civil, electrical and electronics, information communication technology agriculture business, and liberal studies there is a low turnout.

“Currently our students are less than 500 and yet the institution can hold up to 2500 students, given that
that we have facilities in terms of structures, equipment, gadgets, experienced trainers we have few students we need and ask is to bring the students to learn.
TVET courses are courses that give students skills immediately because as soon as they acquire skills the students can be able to earn a living on either certificate.

“Currently the government is encouraging students to do technical courses which give them immediate jobs such as plumbing, building technology, agriculture, food and beverage, Fashion, and design. Students to acquire skills here for them to earn a living,” he said.
He says the institution has facilities that include electric and electronic workshops, building and civil workshops, we have ICT-made computer labs, we have Agricultural places where students practice.

Philomen Saina Deputy Principal “Youths should pursue technical courses to get skills and knowledge that will help them earn a living. We urge youths to come and join our institutes for them to get skills since if we invest in youths we will invest in the future,”
