Mt. Kenya MPs Flip on Gachagua: Support Kindiki’s Installation After Impeachment
In a surprising political turn, several Members of Parliament from the Mt. Kenya region, who had strongly defended ousted Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, have now shifted their allegiance. Within 24 hours of the Senate voting to uphold Gachagua’s impeachment, MPs including Wakili Mureu (Gatanga), Mary Wamaua (Maragua), Joseph Munyoro (Kigumo), Peter Kihungi (Kangema), and Chege Njuguna (Kandara) voted in favor of Kithure Kindiki’s appointment as the new Deputy President.
The vote, conducted manually and overseen by Speaker Moses Wetangula, resulted in a unanimous approval from 236 MPs, with no abstentions or oppositions. This rapid shift in support has raised eyebrows and led to speculation about the MPs’ initial backing of Gachagua. Critics suggest their earlier defense may have been a strategic move to maintain political favor within the Mt. Kenya constituency, rather than a genuine commitment to Gachagua’s leadership.
As Kindiki prepares for his swearing-in ceremony scheduled for Saturday at Uhuru Gardens, the motivations behind this political pivot remain under scrutiny. Observers are questioning whether the MPs will continue to prioritize the interests of their constituents or if their actions were merely a façade to align with the prevailing political winds.
