MTRH Marks World Kidney Day 2024
Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH) today joined the rest of the world in marking World Kidney Day 2024.
The day is devoted to highlighting issues around kidney wellbeing and dangers related with chronic kidney disease. It is meant to promote early detection and prevention measures to limit the effect of kidney illness.
The Hospital commemorated the day by holding an awareness walk through the streets of Eldoret town; flagged off by the Ag. Senior Director, Clinical Services, Dr. Owen Menach on behalf of the CEO.
Other activities included free health screening, awareness campaigns, and a blood donation drive held at the Hospital’s Memorial Grounds.
Dr. Philip Cheptinga, the Head of Nephrology at MTRH, called upon Parliament to expedite the passing of the Kenya Organ and Transplant Bill 2023. This legislation, he said, would regulate and facilitate deceased donor programs, a potential game-changer.
Several barriers have hindered optimal kidney care access, including lack of diagnosis, limited health insurance coverage, and expensive medication particularly for post transplant care.
MTRH has conducted over 120 successful Kidney transplants ,to date, and is currently part of the routine surgical procedures done on a weekly basis.
Heamodyalisis at the Hospital is done on an average of 80 adults and 10 children per day.
