Muslim Leaders Call for Unity and Peace Amid Political Turmoil in Kenya
During the Maulidi celebrations held in Eldoret town, prominent Muslim leaders, including Dr. Sheik Wakili Hassan Kinyua Omari, Chairman of Muslims Professionals Legal Africa and CEO of Peace League Africa, addressed pressing issues facing the nation.
The leaders voiced their concerns about Kenya’s struggling economy and political instability.
Dr. Kinyua urged President William Ruto and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua to reconcile their differences, emphasizing the importance of unity for the country’s progress.
He highlighted the detrimental effects of their ongoing conflict, stating, “If the president and his deputy can fight, it is not okay.” He called for the independence of the executive, parliament, and judiciary, particularly urging the Senate to carefully consider Gachagua’s impeachment case before any decisions are made.
“The judiciary must ensure justice for all parties involved,” Kinyua added, warning against public attacks on politicians, encouraging Kenyans to exercise their democratic rights in the upcoming 2027 elections.
Amidst these political discussions, the leaders also addressed the alarming intertribal violence in Tana River, where clashes over resources have led to loss of life.
Sheikh Abubakar Bini, Chairman of the Council of Imams and Preachers of Kenya in the North Rift region, condemned the government’s silence on the matter.
“It is sad that lives are being lost. The police force used to restore peace in Baringo should be deployed to Tana River,” he remarked, also criticizing the language used in the deputy president’s impeachment motion as uncalled for.
Shariff Jafar called for a return to peace, echoing the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad, and urged Kenyans to refrain from demonstrations that hinder peace efforts. “Everything can be achieved when there is peace,” he asserted, encouraging a culture of reconciliation and understanding among all communities.
The sentiments expressed during this significant gathering reflect the urgent need for dialogue and collaboration to navigate Kenya’s current challenges and foster a more peaceful and united nation.
