After the successful desilting of feeder canals to guarantee consistent water supply for rice farmers in Mwea, Hon. Mary Maingi is now focusing on a new initiative aimed at enhancing farming infrastructure. The Mwea Member of Parliament is drafting legislation to mandate the National Irrigation Board to take responsibility for maintaining and upgrading on-farm roads.

Speaking on the issue, Hon. Maingi emphasized the critical role of well-maintained roads in improving the livelihoods of rice farmers. “Proper on-farm roads will significantly reduce transportation costs, improve access to farms, and boost overall productivity for rice farmers,” she stated.

Mwea, one of Kenya’s largest rice-producing regions, has long struggled with inadequate infrastructure that hampers the movement of inputs and produce. By addressing this challenge, Hon. Maingi hopes to create a more efficient system that not only benefits farmers but also strengthens the rice value chain.

This initiative builds on her earlier achievements, including ensuring the desilting of canals that have greatly improved water availability for farming. As the MP continues to advocate for her constituents, this proposed legislation is set to further enhance the economic viability of rice farming in the region.

Hon. Maingi’s commitment underscores her dedication to creating sustainable solutions for farmers, ensuring Mwea remains a key contributor to Kenya’s food security.
