NCCK North Rift Region Advocates for Dignified Livelihoods and Resilient Communities in Regional Conference

RCEA Conference and Training Center in Eldoret recently played host to the 14th Regional Conference of the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) North Rift Region. Held on April 18th and 19th, 2024, the conference gathered delegates from Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Uasin Gishu, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, and Turkana Counties, under the theme “Dignified Livelihoods; Resilient Communities,” inspired by Galatians 6:9.

Amidst the backdrop of camaraderie and shared purpose, the conference was overshadowed by the tragic passing of esteemed military personnel, including Chief of Defense Forces General Francis Ogolla, in a recent incident. The delegates expressed deep sorrow and extended condolences to the families and the nation.

Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Chemengich, the newly elected Regional Chairman of NCCK North Rift Region, addressed the somber moment, saying, “We mourn the loss of General Ogolla and his companions. Their passing leaves a void in our hearts and a challenge to address the underlying issues of insecurity.”

The conference deliberated on various issues affecting the region, with a focus on addressing insecurity, promoting infrastructural development, combating corruption, and advocating for inclusive governance.

In a statement addressing the endemic insecurity plaguing the North Rift region, the delegates called for urgent action from both national and county governments. “For too long, our communities have suffered from the scourge of banditry-driven violence. It is time for decisive measures to restore peace and security,” remarked Moderator Samson Akoru.

The delegates emphasized the importance of infrastructural development as a catalyst for economic growth and social cohesion. Elder Samuel Sawe, the Honorary Treasurer of NCCK North Rift Region, highlighted the need for investment in transport, communication, education, and healthcare infrastructure. “Quality infrastructure is essential for improving livelihoods and fostering resilient communities,” Sawe stated.

Corruption emerged as another pressing concern addressed by the conference. Rev. Silas Ruto, the Youth Representative, urged for accountability and transparency in governance. “Corruption undermines development and erodes public trust. It is imperative that those implicated in corrupt practices face the full force of the law,” emphasized Rev. Ruto.

The conference also underscored the importance of citizen participation in governance and electoral processes. Pst. Everlyne Marindich, the Women Representative, emphasized the need for inclusive and transparent governance. “Our democracy thrives when citizens are actively engaged in decision-making processes. It is our collective responsibility to ensure accountability and uphold the rule of law,” asserted Pst. Marindich.

In conclusion, Bishop Dr. Emmanuel Chemengich reiterated the call for solidarity and unity among community members. “As we strive for dignified livelihoods and resilient communities, let us embrace love and compassion towards one another. Together, we can overcome the challenges and build a brighter future for all,” concluded Bishop Chemengich.

The conference concluded with a prayer for God’s guidance and blessings upon the North Rift Region and the nation of Kenya.

In line with the NCCK Constitution, a new regional team was elected that will hold office 2024 – 2027 they include: Chairperson: Bishop Dr Emmanuel Chemengich, Vice Chair: Moderator Samson Akoru, Hon Treasurer: Elder Samuel Sawe, Women Rep: Pst Everlyne Marindich, Youth Rep: Rev Silas Ruto and PWD Rep: Daniel Kogo
