NEMA Enforcement Team Takes Exhibits of Companies’Products and Pacckaging Materials Polluting the Nairobi Rivers


The National Environment Management Authority enforcement team and the NEMA police unit on Thursday inspected and took exhibits of companies’products and packaging materials polluting the Nairobi Rivers and blocking river flow.

The inspection was carried out at Ngong’ River along Likoni road, Nairobi and Mathare Rivers along the outer ring road.

Section 13 of the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2013 requires producers to bear Extended Producer Responsibility to prevent pollution by products they introduce into the Kenyan market including waste arising therefrom. Companies whose products were found in the river will be issued with a restoration order to remove their products from the river.

Failure to comply within 30 days will lead to prosecution. The Authority intends to carry out the surveillance regularly to ensure proper waste management at pre and post consumer level to assure Kenyans a clean and healthy environment.
