New County Transport and Safety Committee Appointed in Elgeyo Marakwet
In a significant move to address the escalating road safety issues, Elgeyo Marakwet County Governor H. E. Wisely Rotich has appointed a seven-member team to the newly established County Transport and Safety Committee (CTSC). The announcement was made during a ceremony presided over by Acting County Secretary Michael Sengech, who awarded appointment letters to the committee members.
The CTSC, composed of representatives from various government departments, is tasked with overseeing the management and regulation of road transport systems within the county. The committee members are:
1. **Emmy Kosgei** – CECM for Roads and Infrastructure
2. **Philip K. Cheptoo** – Matatu Sector
3. **Josphat Kerich** – Town Administrator
4. **Kipyego Murei** – Base Iten
5. **Silas Kiplagat** – Director of Trade
6. **Isaac Kibet** – National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA)
7. **Ezekiel Koech** – Regional Manager NTSA
The primary objective of the CTSC is to enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the county’s road transport systems. The committee will prepare and submit reports on these aspects as required by the authority, and offer advisory support on road transport matters.
The appointment comes amid a troubling increase in road crash fatalities and injuries, with pedestrians and motorcyclists disproportionately affected. In the 2023-2024 period, Elgeyo Marakwet County recorded 16 fatalities. The CTSC is expected to implement strategies to reduce these fatalities and injuries by 50%, marking a decisive step towards improving road safety in the region.
The establishment of the CTSC reflects the county’s commitment to tackling road safety challenges and ensuring a safer environment for all road users.
