The County Government of Busia through Ward Development Projects, has procured a tractor
to help farmers of Malaba South Ward in Teso North Sub County.

Agriculture Executive, Dr Moses Osia who launched the tractor at Kiriko ACK Church compound said the purchase of the tractor was in line with the Governor, H.E Sospeter Ojaamong’s agenda of making farmers do farm preparation and mechanizaton in the county.

“Tractors procured will enable farmers prepare their farms early enough. Our aim is to purchase at least three tractors per ward, but we have began with one,” he said.

He added:” In the next one month we shall be able to plough 400 acres of land in the ward. The demand for tractors is too high and that is why the County Government of Busia is putting efforts to repair and maintain the current 14 tractors excluding the seven procurred through Ward Development Projects.”

He said the County Government will also ensure there is adequate fuel required to plough and enable farmers prepare their farms early, disclosing that farmers are charged Sh2000 per acre which is subsidized rate compared to privately owned which charge between Ksh3,500 to Ksh.4,000 per acre.

” I urge residents to utilize ward tractors and till their farms. Other MCAs should follow suit by budgeting to procure tractors, that is the best way to enable farmers access tractors,” he said.

He continued: ” I am optimistic in the near future each of the 35 wards in the county would have purchased at least a tractor and put more money for fuel.”

The CECM also urged farmers to make use of this small rains to prepare their farms and hopefully when the weather improves again, do what we call dry planting.
