No Relent On Evictions: Exercise Kicksoff At Kodhek & Mayabi Estates
County Executive Committee Member for the Department of Lands, Physical Planning, Housing and Urban Development Mr Anthony Sitienei together with the Chief Officer Housing and Urban Development Mr Julius Koech, this morning led a team of officers in eviction of tenants that have accrued their rent arrears beyond Ksh.200,000 at the Kodhek and Mayabi County owned houses.
In a bid to recover the dues owed by the tenants to the County Government, the eviction exercise that begun from Pioneer Houses a few days ago, today the focus was on the two above mentioned estates that saw the exercise take whole day.
In his remarks, Mr. Sitienei noted with concern how the County Government has been unable to collect rent in years as some tenants denied the County to collect its revenue despite the county giving the tenants fair rates in the rent prices and extensively giving notices regularly on reminders for payments.
Mr. Sitienei noted that its only by getting revenue that the County Government can get more services running for residents. It’s interesting to note that some individuals living in Government houses have actually lived in the premises for over 10yrs without paying a cent to the County.
“The Department has been generous enough to let people plan on payment but , some tenants are adamant to even make an effort of paying! Hence we have taken an action of letting them out of the premises to allow us get dues from the houses,”said Sitienei
While undertaking the early morning exercise, Chief Officer Housing and Urban Development Mr Julius Koech, and the enforcement team also realised some houses had been converted to animal dens by the tenants.
“We have every reason to do these evictions. It’s shocking that some people are actually keeping pigs inside the houses, we shall carry forth with the exercise and we shall do this in all the county owned houses, ” said Mr Koech
In a rejoinder, Ag. Director Housing Ms Beatrice Menjo together with Lands Administrator Mr. Sila Boit and the Principal Housing officer Mr. Isaac Sang, led the teams in going house to house to encourage those with arrears to ensure they pay the balances on time.
