OPINION: Why It Not Good For Homabay Leaders to Snub President William Ruto’s Event
The decision of the elected leaders from Homabay County not join president Ruto in a church service at Homa Bay town is uncalled for and a big blow to the president’s agenda of uniting the Country.
This comes after Homabay governor Gladys Wanga and Homabay town Member of parlimanet Peter Kaluma snubbed president William Ruto while attending a church service in the region.
President Ruto is seeking to unite the country considering the fact that he did not get votes from the region which is perceived to be Raila Odinga’s stronghold.
Contrary to the expectations the president received a warm welcome from residents and this could be a signal that the Nyanza region is ready to engage with the government bearing in mind that it is the opposition stronghold.
What raises questions is the absence of the leaders and the warm reception from residents, Could it mean that the region is divided?.
It should be noted that during the naming of his cabinet president Ruto achieved regional balance by nominating Eliud Owalo as ICT Cabinet secretary who comes from the opposition region.
This is one of the best government Kenya has ever had in terms of power distribution and it is the right direction the citizens would love the country to move.
It seems that the elected leaders from this region are still recovering from the Augusts general election as they still dispute president Ruto’s victory.
This can be confirmed by the excuses given out by the leaders with Gladys Wanga saying that she was not invited to the event while Peter Kaluma saying he received the information late.
Leaders should be on the front line in bringing unity to the nation. Such acts derail the government’s efforts of bringing development.
In September the deputy president Rigathi Gachagua visited Kisumu County and was warmly received. This indicates that Nyanza Region is changing its political ambitions.
