Over 200 Music Copyright Society of Kenya Want Total Leadership Overhaul 

More than 200 Artistes from North Rift region wants the leadership of Music Copyright Society of Kenyan overhauledwith immediate effect over bad governance.

The artistes have petitioned President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene in their plight over none payment of their dues despite the MCSKcolleting royalties on their behalf that runs into billions of shillings annually in the country.

Led by their spokesman William Getumbe, the musicians said they had lost confidence in the leadership of the MCSK noting that the change of guard at the body was long overdue.

Getumbe challenged MCSK to state the criteria it was using to pay

local artistes noting musicians in the region have never received their dues unlike their counterparts in the other regions.

“We want to know where the millions of shillings MCSK collects from artistes across the country as royalties annually goes. It is sad that we are living from hand to mouth despite putting in more efforts to produce hundreds of gospel music albums,’ cried Getumbe.

The artistes claimed that despite the MCSK colleting royalties on their behalf, they were not benefiting from the same and called on the Head of State to intervene by ordering for total overhaul of the organization’s top leadership.

According to the artistes, there is no equitable distribution of royalties to members and non-members of music copyright society of Kenya across the country as it is supposed to be.

Getumbe has warned that unless the government address their demands

with the urgency it deserves, they will stop MCSK from collecting royalties on behalf of musicians in the country.

“We fail to understand what method MCSK is using to pay musicians

because we have not received anything for the last one year despite collecting royalties on our behalf in this region,” wondered Getumbe.

Getumbe faulted the MCSK for being a stumbling block to the growthmusic industry in the country which he attributed to lack of propermanagement structure and transparency in place.
