Over 90 Percent of Children Get Free Eye Glasses
A partnership between the County Government of Uasin Gishu and Operation Eyesight Universal has given free corrective glasses to at least 92 per cent of school children who had eye problems.
The findings were reported in a meeting between the County Government and stakeholders. The meeting bade to discuss the findings of the eye health program that was conducted across the learning institutions.
Speaking during the meeting, Acting Deputy Director Planning and Administration, Richard Cheserek, noted that 92% of children with refrective eye errors received glasses for free.
Administering free glasses has worked to improve learning for the beneficiaries. This works to add muscle on Governor Jonathan Bii intention of creating programs to encourage and improve learning in schools.
“As a department, we are working on ensuring that access to free eye surgical services are administered at our referral facilities to test, detect and solve eye problems for children who were not necessarily aware of their problems,” adds Cheserek.
The acting Director also noted that vision impairment stood at 7.8 per cent and over 1000 people access eye services at Huruma Sub County Hospital. The numbers have gone up due to heightened awareness carried out by the Department.
