Parents Boss Wants MOE To reduce Fees
The Kenya Parent’s Association is calling upon the Ministry of Education to either add the one-week students have been at home to the academic school calendar or reduce the school fees to coincide with the number of weeks students have been in school.
Speaking to the press, Parent’s Association Chairman Nicholas Maiyo said the school fee has been an issue for the parents as they have been forced to pay school fees four times this year because the academic calendar which was supposed to span thirteen weeks has been reduced to nine weeks by the Ministry of Education.
“The one week students have stayed at home due to the elections should be added to the academic school calendar to prevent parents from paying extra school fees or the school fee should be reduced according to the number of weeks the students have been in school because parents have paid school fees four times this year,” Maiyo said.
Following the reduction of school fees in National Schools from 53000 to 45000 by the government, Nicholas noted that 60% of Schools are still charging 53000 and urged parents who have a fee structure of 53000 to send them to the Parents Association where they will compile and forward them to the Ministry of Education to be dealt with.
“We as the parent association are calling upon parents who have a fee structure of 53000 to send the fee structures to our association where we will compile and send them to the Ministry of Education to be dealt with,” Nicholas said.
On the Competency Based Curriculum, Maiyo acknowledged that it is still challenging to parents and the teachers but those challenges are not so much that the Curriculum should be changed as a majority of parents loved CBC because it equipped their kids with values and strengthened their talents.
He further stated that there was a misinterpretation of the Competency-Based Curriculum by teachers and the solution to these misinterpretations is to dedicate more time to the training of teachers so as to equip them with the necessary skills to educate the students.
“We as the association agree that CBC is a new Curriculum that the kids enjoy even a majority of parents support it because it enables their kids to stand for themselves at home, equips them with values and strengthens their talents,” Maiyo concluded.
Competency Based Curriculum is the new educational system in Kenya that is set to replace the 8-4-4 educational system introduced in 2017 by the Kenya Institute Curriculum Development and it consists of 2-6-3-3 educational cycle grouped into four categories starting with early year education, middle school, senior school, and tertiary school.
