In a significant development in Kenyan politics, members of Parliament have convened to deliberate on a motion aimed at impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The motion, introduced by Kibwezi East MP Mwengi Mutuse, has received considerable backing, with 291 MPs signing the petition, signaling a strong push for Gachagua’s removal from office.

Speaker Moses Wetangula has officially approved the motion, which accuses Gachagua of multiple serious offenses, including breaches of the constitution and abuse of his official position. Among the ten allegations listed, Gachagua is charged with fostering ethnic favoritism and bias, purportedly violating articles 10 and 27 of the constitution.

In light of these developments, Gachagua has expressed his readiness to face the consequences if the majority of MPs decide to proceed with the impeachment. “I have no means to sway the MPs who have already endorsed the petition against me,” he stated, emphasizing his acceptance of the democratic process.

The Deputy President has faced criticism for remarks perceived to exacerbate ethnic divisions within the country. Additionally, he stands accused of interfering in Nairobi County’s governance, particularly for allegedly inciting public unrest over the relocation of Wakulima Traders to Kangundo Market.

The motion also asserts that Gachagua has failed to uphold his oath of office, which mandates compliance with the constitution. MP Mwengi Mutuse highlighted that Gachagua’s actions are inconsistent with article 48, which requires the Deputy President to perform his duties in accordance with constitutional guidelines.

As Parliament deliberates on the motion, the political landscape in Kenya remains tense, with the potential for significant ramifications depending on the outcome of the vote.
