Northrift Pharmacists are moving around sensitizing the community on the safe use of drugs as they marked this year’s World Pharmacists Day.

Speaking to the press Dr. Dan Demusic from the Pharmaceutical Society of Kenya Northrift Branch said the program aims at educating the public, especially patients with non-communicable diseases, on the safe and efficient use of drugs.

“There has been a rise in the number of non-communicable diseases like diabetes and hypertension just to mention but a few. Our role as pharmacists is to advise our patients on the various drugs they use and how to minimize interactions between those drugs to ensure they are safe when they use them,” Dr Demusic said.

Dr. Demusic further said the increased circulation of substandard and counterfeit medical products continues to threaten good healthcare in the country and that the government should improvise means to deal with such cases.

“The government has full potential in ensuring products that are not registered are terminated. Health care is very vital and these products impose great danger on humans when consumed. Action should be taken on anyone found guilty of manufacturing and distribution of these drugs must face the law,” he said.

Dr. Henry Amdany urged the public to be cautious of who and where they buy drugs from to ensure the supply of counterfeit drugs in the market to reduce further health risks among the people.

“You should be careful and counter check where you get your drugs from. Examine whether the chemists you are buying drugs from are certified by the pharmacists and poisons board. You have the right to check the business permit and the pharmacists and poisons board code to be sure the drug seller is a certified pharmacist. The public plays an important role in fighting counterfeit drugs,” said Amdany.

World Pharmacist Day is celebrated annually on the 25th of September to unite pharmacists all over the world to promote unity and outline the sound effects of pharmacy on health.
