Police at the Huruma Police station in Eldoret have arrested a suspect in connection with the theft of water meters and vandalism of Eldoret Water And Sanitation Company property.

Speaking to the press Walter Ayoti a village elder in Mwanzo estate said the suspect was arrested with 12 meters packed in a bag.
“We have arrested a suspect in Mwanzo Estate, the suspect was among four people found stealing at night and had 12 meters in a bag. The other three escaped and police are looking for them,” said Ayoti.

He noted that the thieves have been targeting Kapsuswa, Kamanda, Elsee, and Mwanzo where the theft has become rampant in the recent past.

Eldowas Managing Director Peter Biwott said they will start naming and shaming the scrap metal dealers and shop owners in Eldoret town involved in the business of buying stolen meters.

“The company has been losing 39% of the water distributed which is an equivalent of Ksh 450 million shillings of revenue lost per year due to the theft of the meters and vandalism of water pipes. We will start naming and shaming the scrap metal dealers and shop owners in Eldoret town,” The Eldowas Boss said.

Biwot said the syndicate has become a big challenge for the company though they have tried to reinforce their security team in all estates.

“I am calling residents to continue being vigilant and report the suspects to the police to help stop the theft which has become very rampant in Eldoret,” he said.

Deputy Sub County Police Commander Turbo Sub Christopher Wesonga, confirmed the incident as he assured residents of the affected estates that security will be beefed up.
