Police officers in Uasin Gishu County have launched an investigation into a recruitment agency suspected of attempting to defraud over 45 youths from Chelabei in Ziwa. The young individuals were reportedly promised overseas jobs, but the scheme took a dangerous turn when they realized they were being conned.

According to the County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Daniel Muleli, the recruitment agency in question, named Northinking, is based in Nairobi. The agency allegedly lured the youths with promises of lucrative employment abroad, offering skilled workers a salary of KSh 40,000 and unskilled workers KSh 70,000.

Muleli confirmed that the CEO of the agency, an Indian national, is yet to be interrogated. The youths were transported to Eldoret by Victor Kiplagat, a local boda boda operator, who also allegedly connected them to the fraudulent agency. Kiplagat arranged for the agency to send money for fuel to transport the youths to Eldoret.

The youths, led by Amos Koech, recounted their experience to the media. After being taken to a field near Boma Inn, they became suspicious of the situation and moved to a nearby residence in Annex. At this point, they realized they had been deceived and quickly alerted the police. The authorities responded swiftly, arresting the suspect involved.

Muleli emphasized that the recruitment agency is licensed and operates in Nairobi. However, the agency failed to notify the relevant authorities before sending representatives to Eldoret, as is required by law. The investigation is ongoing, and the suspect is currently in police custody.

Eldoret has previously experienced cases of individuals being defrauded of their hard-earned money, and the police are determined to uncover the full extent of the fraud. The community has been urged to remain vigilant when dealing with recruitment agencies and to report any suspicious activities to the authorities.
