Police officer dies by suspected suicide in Kirinyaga
A police officer attached to the Kerugoya Police station in Kirinyaga County was on Wednesday found hanging from the roof of his rented house in Kerugoya town.
His caretaker, Ann Wanjiru, said that she had gone to check up on him because he had been missing since Monday.
Wanjiru said that after efforts to try and open the door turned futile, she decided to use an object to peep through the window, where she discovered a body hanging from the roof.
“I tried to open it in vain as the door was locked from inside. I was shocked after seeing the body I immediately called the authorities,” Wanjiru said.
“We wonder why the officer decided to end his life and we think they are being paid well by the government.”
Confirming the incident, Kamukunji Assistant Chief Julius Ngari that the deceased’s colleagues had been looking for him after he was a no-show at the police station.
“His colleagues had been looking for him for the last two months, little did they know he had rented here two kilometers away from the police station,” Ngari said.
Ngari further advised residents to always check up on one another to tame the spike in the number of suicides in the country.
“Some cases are linked to mental illness caused by the breakdown in socio-economic safeguards, and we have to talk to each other,” he said.
Meanwhile, the deceased’s body has been taken to Kerugoya hospital mortuary.
