President Ruto Commissions Malaba Water Project Lot 1

His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto, PhD CGH on Sunday 21st January, 2024 commissioned the Malaba Water Supply project at Malakisi Treatment Plant.

The President was accompanied by the Cabinet Secretary Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Hon Zacharia Njeru EGH, Principal Secretary State Department for Water and Sanitation Mr Julius Korir CBS and Water Secretary Eng SAO Alima EBS among other senior Ministry officials and SAGAS Chairs and CEOs of LVNWWDA & CRVWWDA.

The project cost is Ksh.654,321,139.66 and serves a population of
173,624 people in the areas of Malaba, Malakisi in Bungoma West and Kimaeti Sub Counties. This project commenced on 17th January 2020 and was completed on 17th January 2024.

The scope of work includes:
1. Intake at Ndakaru- 13,630m3/day
2. Raw water main – 13.2 Kms
3. Treatment Works – 6,000m3/day
4. Rehabilitation of existing treatment works – 2150m3/day
5. Laying of 74kms of pipeline
6. Rehabilitation of 7Nr. Tanks
7. Construction of 2Nr masonry tanks
8. Construction of 7Nr water kiosks.

At a public gathering at Chesikaki, the President further revealed that the government has spent 600 Million spent ksh 600 Million for Chesikaki water supply that will supply water to Malakisi, Malaba and Kocholia. A further ksh 200 Million and ksh 100 Million will be required for the last mile connection for both Malakisi and Chesikaki respectively.

The President stated that the government has negotiated for African Development Bank loan of ksh.40 Billion out of which Ksh 2 Billion will be spent on water in Bungoma county and ksh.1 Billion in Busia county respectively.

The President later commissioned a community water kiosk for the local residents around the treatment plant. Local leadership present included Speaker of the National Assembly Hon. Moses Wetangula, Governor Kenneth Lusaka (Bungoma county), Governor Dr. Paul Otwoma (Busia county) and area Member of Parliament Hon. John Waluke (Sirisia constituency).
